Change affects us deeply as individuals, and as project or change managers, it’s important we understand the emotions involved with change. This is often referred to as Emotional Intelligence.

Communicating with people based upon how THEY need to be communicated with is essential for their understanding and buy in. Working with people to move them from resistance to acceptance requires empathy, patience, and more than a little persistence. It’s a critical skill for change managers to hone. Daniel Goleman has a host of books, training, articles, and references that provide great insight into this critical area.

You can also listen to him here as interviewed on Oprah’s Super Soul Conversations where he shares why this skill is so essential for business success.

The next time you see someone grappling with change, take a little time and help them work through it by understanding their perspective and framing the vision so it is easier for them to absorb.
